St Mary's Calne girls independent boarding school from Wiltshire won three awards at the SW Regional Final of Young Enterprise with their company 'Luna & Sol' - Best Financial Management, Best Report and the overall prize - Best Young Enterprise Company in the South West.

The event was held at the Renishaw Innovation Centre in Gloucestershire. Luna and Sol set up an innovative and original trade stand to promote their contemporary range of loose-leaf teas for the traditional market and fresh range of bubble teas for a younger audience.

The judges were full of praise for all the teams’ efforts but  that they said Luna and Sol performed to an exceptional standard in every criteria. They won three awards, including the award for Best Financial Management, Best Report and the overall award for the South West Company of the Year.

Plymouth’s own team Iridescent, from DHSG, also did exceptionally well winning two awards - Best Team and Best Managing Director - and will be presenting to The Range’ buyers today (Monday).

To take their minds off the competition, all the teams were treated to a tour of some of the innovations created by Renishaw, showing how high-tech engineering can be used for a wide range of applications including neuroscience, facial reconstruction, spectroscopy and the Bloodhound supersonic car. The girls later gave a presentation telling the story of their company to approximately 150 people, including other Young Enterprise competitors, influential business people and local dignitaries.

In addition to the Company Programme Awards, Rob Zacal of GA Solicitors, Plymouth, was awarded a Gold Award by YE West Devon Manager Stephanie Anderson for going ‘above and beyond’ as Chair of the YE West Devon Board. Mrs Anderson said: “Rob stepped in as Chair despite the Board halving in number and although he became a new Dad he still managed to help organise and attend the Christmas and Spring Trade Fairs, several training events and the YE West Devon Final. We were very grateful to Rob for his outstanding enthusiasm, dedication and support, as without him the competition would not have been as successful

Having been crowned the best Young Enterprise company in the South West, Luna and Sol are now looking forward to representing St Mary’s at the National Final in London from 5th-7th July.
