Musical play ‘The Changing Room’ is set to give the popular TV Show Inbetweeners a run for its money.

Performed by acting students at the Keay Theatre, St Austell, the play is part of National Theatre Connections, the annual event involving 260 young theatre groups and 28 leading Partner Theatres from across the UK and Ireland, Cornwall College St Austell included.

The Changing Room is one of 10 brand new plays written especially for the Connections project by the best playwriting talent in the UK, including Chris Bush who is the writer for the play and is best known for her 2007 work ‘TONY! The Blair Musical’.

“It's a musical set in a swimming pool changing room,” explained acting student Sophia Mailer.

“The audience is a fly on wall, watching the awkward and naive interactions between the teenagers.”

Former student, Morgen Johnson has returned to the college during her gap year to be assistant director on the project. Morgen was involved in last year’s Connections play ‘Status Update’ and she explained that The Changing Room is a real “throwback to adolescence” and the “journey to adulthood”.

“In rehearsals, we're loving finding humour in the toughest time of our lives; the teenage years,” she said.

“Chris Bush has written a play that is endlessly relatable, moving and funny, with just the right amount of actor to audience confrontation.”

Acting Student Annalaise Turner said the great thing about the play is how physical it is.

“We're filling every moment with striking visuals, lifts, choreography, and ensemble work,” she added.

There will be two performances of the hour long show, the first will be on Thursday 22nd March at 7pm at the Keay Theatre, St Austell.

For tickets (£6/£4) call 01726 226454.
