One of the UK’s top hair stylists flew in from Northern Ireland with his team to inspire the next generation in Cornwall.

The award winning Shane Bennett gave a demonstration a cut above the rest that inspired hundreds of students from Cornwall College St Austell, Saltash and Camborne.

Held in the Keay theatre in St Austell, the students watched a fantastic demonstration by Shane and his Colour Director, Dorothy Sturgeon.

This is Shane’s third visit to the duchy and he said how “inspiring” he finds the students.

“Coming back and talking to the students takes me back on my journey when I was at college,” he explained.

“It was a pleasure to see a whole new group of students and hopefully inspire them as they go out on their journey.

“It really shows them what you can become as a hairdresser and how fantastic the hairdressing industry is; from salon work to session hairdressing to working on film sets, it all just shows them that good training will help them achieve their goals.”

Lecturer and Team Lead Fran Clapham was keen to see the innovation in the demo and explained it was great to have such an experience in the South West of the country.

“Because of where we are geographically we often we miss out on experiences that show hairdressing innovation,” she asserted.

“So to have Shane and his team come in and show his high fashion work in this way, it really benefits our students and the future of hairdressing in Cornwall.

Lead for Hair and Beauty Margaret Buttfield said the experience was “brilliant” and “inspiring” not only the students but the whole lecturing team.

“Our whole department really look forward to what has become an annual event,” she continued.

“Shane really knows how to inspire both the students and their lecturers with his hair demonstrations and we’re proud to be the only College in Cornwall that offers this exclusive learning opportunity to our students.”

Student Susan Moore, who is studying Theatrical Hair & Make Up, said the session was perfect as “I’m not so much into the cutting, but I love dressing hair and creative colouring”.

“As a mature student it was really great and insightful to hear Shane’s and Dorothy’s stories of how they started and progressed their careers,” she added.
