GWR update on Merehead Quarry derailment

21 Mar 2017

Earlier this evening a freight train leaving Merehead Quarry derailed joining the main line at East Somerset Junction between Castle Cary and Westbury.

Trains are being diverted via Bristol, and we have made arrangements for tickets to be accepted on South West Trains.

There has been damage to the track and it is likely that the line will not reopen until Friday (24 March).  We are working with Network Rail to try and re-open sooner and I will keep you informed.

Our train planning team are working on a revised timetable to operate while the line is closed.  This will mean some cancellations and longer journeys, with diversions via Bristol for London to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall services typically adding 20 minutes.

Trains for Westbury will call at Trowbridge instead, with Pewsey and Newbury services operating normally, albeit at later times.   Newbury and Kennet Valley services provided by our Thames Valley services will run normally.

Details will be on our website before journeys start in the morning.
