Follow up from DCBC June Full Council Meeting - The Future of Further Education

11 Aug 2016

As a result of the recent DCBC Full Council Meeting (10th June) focusing on ‘The Future of FE: a key component in the productivity puzzle’ and of feedback received during and post-event, we are recommending the following actions:

1. An ongoing "call to action"; for our local employers to engage with their local colleges by challenging them all to contact their local college. DCBC will provide an easy to use contacts list and location map. We could obtain this from our college sponsors and those schools involved with the Careers Enterprise Adviser program.

2. Look into future skills gaps in the region and how training providers, not just FE colleges are going to help address these, especially in light of the reforms taking place around Apprenticeships. We will request an article for our next newsletter on this from appropriate organisations.

3. DCBC will look into how we gain impartial careers information advice & guidance (CIAG) for young people so they are shown the opportunities that exist in the region? DCBC will look to challenge appropriate organisations to come up with some joint guidance for schools genuine labour market information about careers in the SW and job opportunities now and for the future. This can be shared with our network for information; put on our website and schools should be encouraged to share with parents.

4. Write to the Association of Head Teachers requesting that they raise this issue of CIAG with their members.

5. Skills and Devolution - how will this impact on areas & the opportunities for skills and devolution to support economic growth and development? DCBC to request regular (quarterly or 6 monthly) updates from both LEPs to share.
