DCBC's Manchester Visit.

14 Mar 2017

Last week, DCBC, Flybe and Exeter Connects (Exeter Airport’s initiative to enhance and promote air connectivity to the business community) lead a delegation of SW business leaders on an exploratory visit to Manchester.

The 12-strong South West delegation flew courtesy of Flybe from Exeter Airport to Manchester in the morning, and returned on the evening fight. A great experience!

Delegates were hosted for breakfast by Manchester Airport where they learned more about Manchester’s international connections, with direct flights onwards to hundreds of destinations worldwide with Flybe’s six international airline codeshare partners that include Etihad, Cathay, Emirates, Hainan, Singapore and Virgin Atlantic. What a value option this is for the region, enabling one to avoid the 4-5 hr slog to Heathrow or Gatwick!

This was followed by a tour and lunch at the Etihad Stadium, home to Manchester City Football Club, finding out more about the value of culture and sport to the economy of the city and of course, air links with the United Arab Emirates..

In the afternoon, meetings were hosted by the Greater Manchester Chamber and included a briefing from the Chamber Chief Executive, Clive Memmott, focusing on the Northern Powerhouse and Devolution, along with colleagues from New Economy Manchester, the Manchester Growth Hub and Marketing Manchester.

A number of areas began to emerge which will warrant further exploration; renewable energies, environmental futures (linked to the Met Office and big data) and ‘GM Futures’ (tasked with the development of a more coherent and effective integrated employment and skills system in Greater Manchester which supports individuals, employers and communities) were top of the list.

Interestingly, one of their number one challenges is attracting and retaining talent and stemming the flow to the SE and London. Join the club!
