The Coolest office in Exeter

20 Feb 2018

In reviewing Aptus UK, Tim Wadsworth, Managing Director of Space, an office fitout and design consultancy, called it “The Coolest Office in Exeter”. Tom Murphy, Founder and owner of Aptus UK & Thought L@B tells us why he has created this new office space in Dix’s Field, Exeter.

Aptus UK formed in Exeter in 2012 after several years of successful business in Melbourne Australia. Australian owner of Aptus UK and Aptus Personnel Australia, Tom Murphy founded his company with the vision of creating an environment which inspires people to be their best. He understands that in order to achieve this, team members need to be happy, healthy and feel empowered to work for the greater cause. Tom says, “For people to genuinely care about their team mates and their clients they need to feel a strong sense of belonging and loyalty in their employer. This doesn’t just come from the office environment it comes from the culture and values of the group”. When Tom moved to Exeter from Australia full time in Dec 2015 he found that the company he’d owned in the UK for 3 years wasn’t culturally strong nor were the values that Aptus represented consistent in everyone within the company. This needed to change if Aptus was to truly become one of the best in the region: a trusted supplier of people.

Over the past 12 months Aptus in Exeter has solidified into a mature team environment, building a winning culture. Aptus has built up partnerships with employers and people with similar values and beliefs. “Without sharing the same values internally, we aren’t able to share these values consistently with our clients, and candidates alike. Once we build the strength as a group we can then build trust and loyalty with our clients who share our beliefs”, says Tom. “The relationships we have with each other as a team are making it easier to naturally build loyal partnerships with our clients; after all, people are our product so it’s important we focus on building these partnerships.”

2017 was an excellent year for Aptus UK and this encouraged Tom to create a special work space to reward the team. The office is designed to provide an open environment for general activities, a quiet space for more focused periods and areas that allow team members to stand whilst at the computer. It provides natural light, lots of greenery, a balance of concrete, steel and reclaimed timber, an inspiring full wall graffiti piece and the latest technology. The space also encourages clients and business associates to hot-desk if they are in town and will now be the new home of Thought L@B, Tom’s Thought Leadership breakfast group.

Over the coming months Aptus will facilitate various workshops, both free and partially subsidised to assist employers in attracting and retaining staff as well as providing leadership and careers coaching for professionals of all levels. Aptus are challenging the perception of recruitment as the business community is changing at a rapid rate. If employers wish to grow in a sustainable way where employees are retained and solidarity in culture is increased, Aptus can help drive this via either recruiting their staff or facilitating workshops to improve the employer’s recruitment processes.
