(ST AUSTELL, CORNWALL: 05/06/17): Cornish horse Rory is celebrating landing a place in the Horse of the Year show in Birmingham this October.

Rory, or Aurora as she’s formerly known, placed first at the Stretcholt Equestrian Centre for SEIB Search for a Star Riding Horse/Hack Horse.

Owner, Ellie Simmonds, who is a lecturer at Cornwall College St Austell, can’t wait for the Horse of the Year show, which will be held at the TopSpec Arena at the NEC Birmingham.

“There were 30 entrants for this class which had to be split into two groups for judging and we were in the second group,” Ellie said.

“The ride judge has to ride them too and then they de-saddle them and to do their confirmation strip. We were one of the six that went through to the final judging in the main judging ring and they had to walk, trot and canter on both reigns before being  placed in the order that they came, with my Rory coming in first place!”

Aurora will be kept busy with regular work, keeping her fit and healthy, according to Ellie.

“She’s still quite young at six so I will be trying to keep her happy and occupied in the lead up to the show; she’s quite a headstrong horse, so I’ve got a challenge on my hands,” she continued.

After the show in October, Ellie would like to start entering Aurora into bigger competitions and have her compete against professionals.
