The Futures Entrepreneurship Centre invites business owners, entrepreneurs, managers, team leaders, individuals, UoP lecturers and students to join this professional development course to:

  • develop and enhance communication skills
  • deploy and understand the power of effective persuasion in professional negotiations
  • learn different communication styles and approaches

Persuasion and negotiation skills can be learnt and are one of the most important skills in today’s world together with communication skills. These skills are critical and essential for business owners, managers, leaders or individuals to help them to achieve set goals and objectives.

Dr Nigel Jackson - The Art of Persuasion

This session will focus on how to make your business communications more persuasive and effective. Furthermore, the session will offer tips from research that businesses will be able to apply in different situations and consequently improve business operations.

Lucy Hirst and Katherine Stevens - Confident Communication: how to approach public speaking, present with conviction and apply positive language

This session will apply a rich skill set of theatre practices and language devices to deliver an accessible guide to communicating with confidence in a business setting. This will range from the use of the body language to making quantitative content creative.  

Charlotte Storey - The Power of Presence

This session, by using techniques that develop the vocal and physical gravitas of the individual, will enable delegates to become aware of their true potential; explore their talents, skills and values; improve vocal pitch, pace and tone to create impact and influence people. It will further explore talents, skills and values within the wider context of career and life experience.  


Charlotte Storey

Charlotte Storey specialises in voice and movement and has been training actors, TV presenters and business clients for over 20 years. She is a multi-award winning trainer, recognised for her skills in the field of personal and professional development. 


Katherine Stevens

Executive Director, The Young Pretenders Theatre Co. | Co-founder, Flip The Bird Theatre Co. | Playwright | Actress | Theatre Practitioner | Producer | 

Katherine Stevens is a South West based playwright, producer, and actress. She co-founded a female-led theatre company in 2017 and works as a freelance actress and playwright in both London and Devon.


Lucy Hirst

Artistic Director, The Young Pretenders Theatre Co. | Co-founder, Flip The Bird Theatre Co. | Director | Actress | Theatre Practitioner | Acting Tutor |

Lucy Hirst is a South West based theatre director, actress, and participatory arts practitioner. She has founded two companies and freelances for large arts organisations across Devon. 


Dr Nigel Jackson

Reader in Persuasion and Communication, a lecturer in the Department of Tourism and Hospitality.

Dr Jackson is currently writing a research based book on persuasive communication within the events industry and deploying the complexity of political persuasion online.
